Project Engineer Skills List
Your Project Engineer skills list should show proof of your ability to manage. As mentioned earlier, different industries need Project Engineers. Construction companies invest a lot of money to put up new buildings. A manufacturing company spends millions launching new products. Software companies have big budgets for new apps. You need management skills to make sure these projects stay on budget and on schedule.
- Education. This job requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals. Companies will prioritize those who have higher educational attainment. Your degree and educational background should be relevant to the job.
Project Engineers for property development should have a degree in Engineering. In our sample resume for a Project Engineer, Morris has a degree in Civil Engineering. Those who are interested in software development should have a degree related to IT. - Certifications. If you want to enhance your value proposition, get a certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP).
This type of certification is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It validates your ability to oversee projects. Likewise, it gives confidence to the company that you have been proven to be a competent Project Manager. - Budget Management. Companies have set aside money to fund their projects. The amount is intended to cover all of its expenses. A good Project Engineer keeps a tight watch on the budget. He/she carefully reviews all the invoices and cross-references them with the estimated costs.
Of course, the quality of work must not be compromised. Thus, if the quality of materials is not good, then better ones should be sourced. The Project Engineer will know if adjustments to the budget have to be made. - Personnel Management. A good Project Engineer knows how to get the best out of his people. He/she routinely oversees their tasks and provides assistance when needed.
The idea is to make sure the project stays on schedule. Any delay in the schedule will cost the company more money. The Project Engineer wants to be sure that his/her team is on the right track.
The Project Engineer also wants to get the right people on the job. He/she is involved in the recruitment, selection, and training processes. - Excellent Communication Skills. It will be easier to get things done if you have excellent communication skills. A good Project Engineer must be able to relay instructions clearly. He/she must have the ability to articulate ideas to the team.
At the same time, the Project Engineer should be open to feedback. After all, communication runs both ways. When there is a feedback cycle, it reduces the risk of making costly mistakes.
Project Engineer Resume Objective
Your Project Engineer resume objective should answer 2 questions:
- “What is my purpose for applying to this job?”
- “Why should you hire me?”
The objective is your purpose. It may sound redundant as you are responding to the job post. However, it personalizes your resume:
“PMP-Certified Project Engineer with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering seeks to become the new Project Engineer for Wilford & Associates Property Developers.”
The “Why” refers to your value proposition. What can you do for the company? How can you help the company achieve its goals? What have you done in your career that merits strong consideration of your application?
“I have more than 8 years of experience as a Project Engineer in the field of construction.”
“I am knowledgeable about the following construction software – ProCore, BuilderTrend, and Eclipse.”
“Among the high-profile projects that I have handled for Randall include Trident Towers, Apex Condominiums, and The Paramount.”
Your objective statement should be short. If you organize your ideas properly, 3-4 sentences should suffice.
Project Engineer Resume Format
You have 2 options for your Project Engineer resume format: Functional or Chronological.
Use the Functional if:
- You have very little to zero experience as a Project Engineer.
- You have a professional license. For example; a licensed Electrical Engineer.
- You have a PMP certification.
- You have a Master’s Degree in Business or a related discipline.
- You have an unemployment gap that exceeds 4 months.
Use the Chronological if:
- You have extensive Work Experience; at least 5 years.
- Your unemployment gap is short; less than 4 months.
- You have an accomplished Work History.
- Your educational attainment is limited.
In our sample resume format for a Project Engineer, we used the Chronological. This format focuses on your Work Experience and Education.
You will have to lead off with your current or latest experience then work your way back. As you have read, we described 8 tasks in Morris’ current job. By the time we got to his time as a Jr. Project Manager, we only selected 5 tasks.
The reason for this is we want to focus on his current skill levels. This is what the recruiter will be looking into.
Entry Level Project Engineer Resume
There are open jobs for those with an entry- level Project Engineer resume. You have a better chance of landing a job where either “Entry Level” or “No Experience” is stated on the post.
Here are 4 tips to help you win the job opening:
- Use the Functional format.
- Highlight relevant technical skills.
- If you have certifications or licenses, indicate them in the following sections: Contact Information (professional license number), Resume Objective, Strengths, and Certifications.
