The classroom provides the basics of Nursing. However, the skills needed for an effective ER Nurse can only be learned in the Emergency Room. As the name of the room implies, an emergency is a priority matter. What if there are 5, 10, 15 emergencies happening at the same time? How do you know which one to prioritize? Does your Emergency Room Nurse skills list have these abilities?
- Education.
The career path to an ER Nurse starts out with the basic Nursing program. A Nursing program will take 4 years. Once you have your degree, you can review for the Nursing licensing exam. If you pass the exam, you may continue with your education. The next course would be a Master’s Degree in Nursing which would take another 2 years. If you want to attain a higher level, you could acquire a doctorate degree after getting your Master’s degree. The benefit of having a higher education is that you get more opportunities for career advancement.
- Certification/ Licensing.
You have to pass the NCLEX test for Nursing before you can start your career. You can take the test for a Practical or Registered Nurse. When you get licensed as a Nurse, then you can begin looking for work. Many start out as “floating nurses”. This is a situation where the hospital will assign you to different departments. You might work with paramedics or even log in time in the Emergency Room. You can also get certified as an ER Nurse. First, you have to get at least 2 years experience in the ER. In the ER, you will handle patients with varying conditions. Despite the urgency, you have to stay focused and know how to stabilize the situation. Nurses are taught different medical procedures. Being proficient in them will go a long way in helping the patients recover. When you apply them, there must be no question to what you are doing. You must be precise. Procedures are by-the-book.
- Pressure Player.
The ER is no longer the classroom. This is real life. Nothing is theoretical anymore. You have to put what you learned to actual use. In some cases, you have to work in life-or-death situations. Throughout it all, you have to remain calm and focused on every patient. You should not panic. The ER can be chaotic. Having the ability to focus on a patient despite everything that is happening around you is a skill you will develop over time.
- Professional Attitude.
Triage is an important part of the job. This means being able to prioritize patients based on your assessment of their condition. This will be very hard to do sometimes. Families and friends of the patient will accost you. They will tell you why they should be the priority. Some may threaten you. Some will drop names of important people. An ER Nurse must be professional at all times because lives are at stake. Observe triage and do what needs to be done.
