Art Teacher Skills List
Is talent enough to become an Art Teacher? There are people who are great in what they do but cannot pass on those skills to others. “Art Teacher” has 2 words. Not only should you be good in art. Likewise, you should be able to teach art to others. There should be more to your Art Teacher skills list than just talent.
Education.
The career path requires a college degree. Teaching art does not only involve technique. You have to teach history. Students want to know what it is like to be an artist. They want to learn how the masters lived their lives.
You also have to teach different styles. Art isn’t only drawing. There’s also sculpture and photography. It’s not just traditional. There’s also digital art. You cannot learn these subjects unless you get formal education.
In our sample resume for Art Teacher, the course taken by Mark was Art Education.
Certification.
As a teacher, you have to be certified/ licensed. The requirements for certification may differ from state-to-state.
If you have a degree in Art Education, you can prepare for the licensing exams. However, if your degree did not cover subjects specific to teaching, you will have to take additional courses.
The course would include lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching methods. Once you’ve passed the course, then you can prepare for the licensing exam.
Art Proficiency.
Many artists grew up learning one medium or one style of art. For example, charcoal for drawing. As an Art Teacher, you have to know many styles and forms of art.
It’s not enough to be good at drawing. You should know sculpture. It’s not enough to know charcoal. You should know watercolor, oil, and painting.
Computer Knowledge.
Some students want to take up art so they can work in marketing agencies or as graphic artists. This is why you should learn Digital Art. Having knowledge in digital art software is important. In many schools, digital art is a subject.
Passion for Art.
You can learn all the technique and theory you want. However, if you don’t have passion for art, it will show in your work. The greatest art in history triggers emotion. You are able to transfer emotion to your creation.
Passion gives art its life. Likewise, you can transfer your passion for art to students in the way you teach. Students will appreciate art more.
Art Teacher Resume Objective

For example, it highlights his passion for art. This is evident when Mark reveals he has an online business. It tells the employer, he has been passionate for art for a long time.
Why is he looking for a job? The employer can find that out… during the interview!

Art Teacher Resume Writing Tips
In art, a mistake might make the creation more beautiful. It can give character to the work of art. Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for your resume. Mistakes can be costly. Take a few seconds to read our Art Teacher resume writing tips:
Keep It Simple – The resume is not a canvas for your art. Keep it simple. Choose a basic font style such as Calibri or Cambria. Make sure it has structure. The contents have to be organized. Your details have to be readable.
Include a Link to Your Portfolio – Employers will want to see what you’ve done so far. You can’t show your work until the interview. Cut through that by including a link to your portfolio. This is the benefit of having a website. Add a portfolio page and display your best work.
Remove Mistakes. There is nothing creative about spelling and grammatical errors. Make sure these are not found on your resume.
Lastly, don’t forget to share your soft skills. These are your defining personality traits. Schools want to hire people with the right personality. You can see how we did it by reviewing our Art Teacher resume sample.
Advice for Your Art Teacher Job Interview
Once you visit our resume section to see some Arts Teacher resume examples, it is time to carry out other essential preparations. Here are a few other things you need to attend to before going on your job interview:
Keep Your Art Teacher resume Updated and Ready at All Times
Employers go through a lot of resumes in a day. What can you do to make yours stand out from all the other resumes on their desks? Aside from updating your resume with your latest work experiences and other recent additions to your education and training, you should aim to compose a resume that will be sure to catch your employer’s attention in a positive way. For one thing, your document should be free of any error in formatting, grammar, or spelling. Another way to ensure a good impression is to highlight your strengths and qualifications that suit the job you are applying for. Finally, familiarize yourself with all the things you have written in your resume.
Get to Know Your Target School or Institution
There are a few things you should know about an establishment before you rush out the door and apply for a position there – its history, its philosophy, the type of institution it is, and other relevant facts. A few keystrokes on your computer or internet-ready phone should be enough to give you an overview of the school or institution you are applying for. While you are at it, go ahead and research about the position itself. At the very least, you should know what will be expected of you when you get the post.
Be Ready to Take a Phone Interview at Any Moment
A phone interview may be conducted, depending on the preferences and policies of your future employer. Although this session is likely to be shorter and less comprehensive than the face-to-face interview, later on, it is nevertheless important to be well-prepared for it. At this time, you should already be fortified with a readiness to elaborate on anything indicated on your curriculum vitae or resume. This phone interview will also be a good opportunity to clarify any question you may have about the facility and the teaching position.
Prepare Intelligent Answers to the Most Important Questions
Although a perfect interview may be a bit too much to aim for, you should still strive for an excellent one that will be enough to get you the job. Here are some of the questions that you should practice answering:
- How do you ensure that critical thinking and analysis are incorporated into your lessons?
- What is the importance of art classes in ensuring a well-rounded high school education?
- What would your ideal classroom setting look and feel like?
- How can you help students with learning difficulties to get an equal voice and opportunity to learn in the classroom?
- How do you engage students to promote collective learning and participation?
- Why do you want a teaching position here instead of elsewhere?
- What significant changes can you bring about for the improvement of this school?
Most interviewers will also give you a chance to ask your own questions at the end of the interview. Keep queries about pay and benefits to yourself until you are actually offered the job. In the meantime, check out the following questions you might want to ask:
- How supportive is the school of arts education?
- What sorts of after-school art clubs and organizations are there?
- What sorts of facilities does the school offer? Are there studios or dark rooms available for use?
Dress in an Interview-appropriate Outfit
Though an interviewer will look deeper beneath your appearance, it is important to exude professionalism inside and out. Slacks, dress shirts, blouses, or business suits should get you started towards projecting a mature, decent, and professional image.
