Hair Stylist Job Description
If you want to be considered for the Hair Stylist position, your resume must catch the eye of the employer. Our Hair Stylist resume sample immediately highlights your strengths as a Hair Stylist starting from your certification and through your various skills.
In addition to being an artist, a Hair Stylist must be a sociable person with an excellent disposition. The workload of a Hair Stylist can be unpredictable. There are days where you could find yourself styling one client after the other. And these days can drag into weeks if you are an in-demand Hair Stylist.
It can be a physically demanding job where you may be on your feet almost the entire day. You should have the endurance to maintain focus on every client as each one will have their individual styles and preferences. You first client may want a re-bond done on her hair while the next one would want a perm. The fifth client may want purple highlights while the 6th would prefer jet black.
In between, you may be trimming, cutting, shampooing, shaving or trying out a new style. You would not want to get mixed up with the demands of your clients!
And each client is a unique personality. As the Hair Stylist , you should be able to get along with all the different personalities that make up your clientele. When fatigue starts to set in, your patience may start to wane. Similar to a barber or a bartender, if you want to succeed in maintaining your clientele, understand that socialization is part of hairstyling. This is part of the job.
You may also be asked to be part of a hairstyling team that has been contracted for a major fashion show. Models have to be on the runway according to schedule and they go through many hairstyles in a show. Hairstyling for a fashion show can run at a frenetic pace.
Models are often set up like an assembly line: cutting, shampooing, blow drying then styling. It’s one model after another. You have to coordinate closely with the fashion coordinator to get the hairstyles right because these have to match the clothing line.
The future of hairstyling looks bright. The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics predicts increasing demand for Hair Stylists until 2018 in the short term. As the population gets older and greyer, more people would seek good Hair Stylist to make them look young again.
Hair Stylist Ideal Job Qualifications
If you plan to apply for a Hair Stylist position you should possess the following qualifications for the job:
Certification
You can become a Hair Stylist even if you only have a high school degree. What is important is that you should be certified as a professional Hair Stylist and this means having to attend a cosmetology school that has been accredited by your state. When you have completed the required courses, the state will ask you to take a licensing exam.
Creative
Creativity is the bread and butter of all artists and that includes Hair Stylists. Hair is your canvas and you have to work on it to make your client look fabulous. There is also a technical component to hairstyling. If you have a vision of a specific hairstyle for a client, executing the cut will require positioning your hands, feet, and body at the correct angle.
Physically Fit
You could be standing the entire day and this could be painful for your lower back, hips, and knees. A good Hair Stylist should be physically fit enough to endure the long days at work. There may be 12 hour days over the course of a week and this may impact upon your endurance and overall health.
Mentally Strong
Hairstyling could also be a high-pressure job. There will be clients that want their hair done exactly as they have discussed it with you. Your schedule could be booked for the entire week with each client expecting you to fulfill their appointed time without delay. As a Hair Stylist, you must always remain composure even during the most trying moments of the job.
Pleasant Disposition
So you are an artist and a psychologist at the same time. Add marketing person to the other hats a Hair Stylist must wear. Clients love coming back to the Hair Stylist who not only cut their hair well but gave them a good time at the salon. You need to have a good rapport with your clients to make sure they keep patronizing your services.
